On the ground among the animals è un progetto di ricerca che prende come riferimento la rete Natura 2000 per indagare il posto che l’uomo occupa all’interno della natura. Questa rete è una serie di corridoi ecologici promossi dall’Unione Europea, creati per preservare la fauna, la flora e la biodiversità. Si tratta di un sistema di comunicazione transnazionale che va oltre le politiche di confine di ogni Stato e mette al primo posto la logica ecologica. I ponti sono tra le infrastrutture più importanti della rete, poiché facilitano il superamento delle barriere architettoniche, come autostrade e strade, da parte degli animali. Allo stesso tempo, recinti multipli e telecamere di sicurezza monitorano e seguono i loro movimenti, mettendo in dubbio la loro apparente libertà di movimento. La serie comprende vedute paesaggistiche di spazi naturali e fotografie di viadotti e altre costruzioni, oltre a istantanee di animali catturati dalle telecamere di sorveglianza installate dai ricercatori. Questo lavoro esplora le tensioni che emergono dal potere che gli esseri umani cercano di esercitare sulla natura. Per farlo, l’autrice analizza le relazioni contraddittorie tra la costruzione di infrastrutture, le politiche e la libertà di movimento e la conservazione della natura.

On the ground among the animals is a research project that takes the Natura 2000 network as a reference for researching the place that human beings occupy within nature. This network is a series of ecological corridors promoted by the European Union, created to preserve fauna, flora and biodiversity. It is a transnational communication system that goes beyond the border policies of each state, and puts ecological logic first. Bridges are some of the most important infrastructures in the network, since they make it easier for animals to overcome architectural barriers such as motorways and roads. At the same time, multiple fences and security cameras monitor and follow their movements, casting doubt on their apparent freedom of movement. The series includes landscape views of natural spaces and photographs of viaducts and other constructions, as well as snapshots of animals captured by surveillance cameras installed by researchers.
This work explores the tensions that emerge from the power that human beings try to exert over nature. To do so, the author analyses the contradictory relationships between infrastructure construction, policies and freedom of movement, and nature conservation.
